What Are the Opportunities to Serve During Mass?
In the Catholic Church, these roles keep liturgies running smoothly and spiritually. While priests lead the Mass, these lay ministers ensure that the environment is welcoming, the Word of God is proclaimed, and the sacred rites are celebrated with reverence.
Sacristan
Working behind the scenes, sacristans manage all the physical elements required for Mass. They prepare the altar, set out the liturgical books, and ensure there are sufficient hosts and wine. After Mass, they clean and store the sacred vessels.

Usher/Greeter
Ushers are ministers of hospitality. They welcome congregants at the doors, help people find seats, and assist those with special needs. They also facilitate the collection, manage the flow of the congregation during Communion, and hand out bulletins at the end of Mass.

Lector/Reader
Lectors (or readers) proclaim the Word of God during the Liturgy of the Word. They read the first and second readings from the USCCB Order of Mass and, in the absence of a deacon, read the Prayers of the Faithful. They require prayerful preparation to clearly deliver these biblical texts.
Who can become a lector or reader?
- Have received the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist).
- Be able to read clearly, confidently, and reverently in public.
- Have a good understanding of the importance of Sacred Scripture in the liturgy.

Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion
An Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion assists the priest and deacon in the reverent distribution of Holy Communion during Mass and, when needed, to the sick and homebound. EMHCs serve with prayerful devotion, helping ensure that the Eucharist is distributed respectfully and efficiently while supporting the spiritual life of the parish community.

Altar Server
Altar Servers assist the priest and deacon at the altar during Mass. They carry the processional cross and candles, hold the liturgical books for the presider, and assist with rituals like preparing the gifts and washing the priest's hands.
Who can become an Altar Server?
- Must be a baptized Catholic.
- Have received First Holy Communion.

Videographer
Videographers use the video equipment at St. Benedict (for the 11am mass and special events such as funerals) and at St. John the Evangelist (for the 5pm mass and special events such as funerals) to video the service so those unable to attend in person can still participate in the mass. This ministry is suitable for anyone; high school students can receive service hours for the ministry.

CLOW Lead
CLOW stands for Children's Liturgy of the Word. The CLOW lead guides the children of the parish to a separate, age-appropriate space during the Sunday Mass readings. They proclaim the scripture readings in a way that children can easily understand and lead related discussions or activities before returning the children to their families for the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Choir/ Music Ministry
Choir members help lead the congregation in singing during Mass and enrich worship through music. Members are expected to attend regular choir practices and participate in scheduled Masses and special celebrations. No professional singing experience is required, just a willingness to serve and share your gift of music.

Coffee and Donuts Host
A Coffee and Donuts Host fosters parish fellowship by creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for parishioners after Sunday Mass. Hosts arrive before Mass to pick up donuts and prepare the serving area by setting up coffee, refreshments, utensils, and other supplies.
During the fellowship gathering, hosts welcome parishioners, distribute refreshments, assist families and guests, and help maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked serving area.
After the event, hosts clean up by wiping down tables, washing or packing away serving supplies, disposing of trash, and ensuring the parish hall is tidy and ready for its next use. Their hospitality helps strengthen community connections and makes all parishioners feel welcome.
